Forgotten Flix

We're talking about the movies YOU grew up with!

Author: Peter Nielsen

Peter was born in Denmark in 1968, but moved to Sweden at the age of six, (not by himself of course), and has lived there ever since. He’s married and has five children, so spare time is somewhat of a luxury. His main interests in life, apart from his family, are long walks, books and movies. Any movie! He has preferences, but he’s not particular as long as it's good or... so bad it's good... he just LOVES MOVIES!

Peter’s Retro Reviews: 10 to Midnight (1983)

Tweet by Peter Nielsen ”Forget what’s legal… Do what’s right!” I’ve stated before that I’m a huge Charles Bronson fan, so it was only a matter of time before we landed on one of his flicks again. I vaguely remember watching 10 to Midnight in the theater back in the day, but it’s been so damn long since I last…

Peter’s Retro Reviews: Action Jackson (1988)

Tweet by Peter Nielsen ”NAME: Jericho Jackson, NICKNAME: Action, HOME: Detroit, PROFESSION: Cop, EDUCATION: Harvard Law, HOBBY: Fighting Crime, WEAPON: You’re lookin’ at ‘em” This week I’m returning to the world of the 80’s action flicks and you can’t go wrong with one with the actual word “action” in the title, can you? Well, you can… but not with this…

Peter’s Retro Reviews: Alligator (1980)

Tweet by Peter Nielsen We haven’t done a giant-animal-on-a-rampage-creature-feature type of flick for a while, have we, so I guess it’s about time we visit that particular genre again. There have been plenty of bad ones made over the years and I’m sure we’ll get to some of those later on down the line, but this week I thought we’d…

Peter’s Retro Reviews: The Princess Bride (1987)

Tweet by Peter Nielsen So, ladies and gentlemen, we’ve, once again, reached the Christmas holidays and what better way to spend it than in the company of a good fairytale? Well, a good fairytale is good company any time of the year, but especially around Christmas, I think. Or if you’re feeling sick or under the weather… which is the…

Peter’s Retro Reviews: La Mala Ordina aka Manhunt (1972)

Tweet by Peter Nielsen This week I’m returning to a genre I’ve always had a soft spot for… namely Italian produced action flicks! Well, actually it’s a sub-genre of that called “poliziotteschi” or Italian crime films. These films all had common denominators such as the mafia, car chases, gunfights and most often brutal and graphic violence. La Mala Ordina, the…

Peter’s Retro Reviews: Blow Out (1981)

Tweet by Peter Nielsen With this week’s movie-pick I, once again, find myself returning to the world of Brian De Palma. That’s not surprising though, considering the fact that he’s a great director who’s given us such gems as Dressed To Kill, Scarface, The Untouchables, Carrie, Carlito’s Way and a personal favorite of mine, Phantom of the Paradise. The comedy…

Peter’s Retro Reviews: Good Guys Wear Black (1978)

Tweet by Peter Nielsen ”Everything went wrong by the numbers… and that takes planning.” It’s been a while since we last talked about an action-flick, so I thought it was time to return to that particular genre. At least this week! I have a soft spot for this type of action-flick from the late 70’s or the 80’s and since…

Sam Haynes – Welcome to the Horror Show: Haunt Music for Halloween

Tweet by Peter Nielsen Those of you who know me, or are long-time listeners to the Forgotten Flix Podcast, know I like to go for long walks. Preferably at night! I usually listen to different podcasts during these walks, but I do occasionally listen to music too. Most often it’s nothing upbeat or anything like what many people listen to…

Peter’s Retro Reviews: The Return of the Living Dead (1985)

Tweet by Peter Nielsen “First Paramedic: You have no pulse, your blood-pressure’s zero over zero, you have no pupillary response, no reflexes and your temperature is 70 degrees. Freddy: Well, what does that mean? First paramedic: Well, it’s a puzzle because, technically, you’re not alive… except you’re conscious, so we don’t know what it means. Freddy: Are you saying we’re…

Peter’s Retro Reviews: Braindead (1992)

Tweet by Peter Nielsen ”Some things won’t stay down… even after they die!” So, my friends! We’ve reached the third week in the 2013 October Spooky Flix Fest and I hope you’ve enjoyed it so far? We’re just a couple of weeks away from Halloween and we’ll be there, as usual, to keep you company and maybe give you a…

Peter’s Retro Reviews: The Fearless Vampire Killers aka Dance of the Vampires (1967)

Tweet by Peter Nielsen “That night, penetrating deep into the heart of Transylvania, Professor Abronsius was un-aware that he was on the point of reaching the goal of his mysterious investigations. In the course of which he had journeyed throughout Central Europe for many years accompanied by his one and only faithful disciple, Alfred. A scholar and scientist whose genius…

Peter’s Retro Reviews: Love At First Bite (1979)

Tweet by Peter Nielsen You can almost taste it, can’t you? That slight change of weather? There’s a chill in the wind and you can actually smell the seasons changing… Yes, boils and ghouls, fall is here, and I love it! Don’t get me wrong, because I like all the seasons… spring, where everything comes to life again. And the…

Peter’s Retro Reviews: Flashpoint (1984)

Tweet by Peter Nielsen ”A wrecked jeep… a skeleton… a rifle… 800,000 dollars in cash.” Flashpoint was released in Sweden in 1985 and I know my friend, Michael, and I rented it at one point. But I remember next to nothing about it.  So, I went into this movie with no preconceived notions at all, other than a hope that…

Peter’s Retro Reviews: The Impossible Kid (1982)

Tweet by Peter Nielsen I recently bought a book called “Action Movie Freak” written by Katrina Hill. The book is a celebration and homage to all things action and included with the book was a DVD featuring a movie called The Impossible Kid, which is a Filipino spy-movie spoof of sorts. Spoof might be the wrong word, because it’s played…

Peter’s Retro Reviews: The Big Bus (1976)

Tweet by Peter Nielsen ”There have been movies about big earthquakes… There have been movies about big boats sinking… Movies about big buildings burning… Movies about big German balloons bursting… And now a movie about… THE BIG BUS.” My movie pick for this week is a forgotten gem from the mid-70s called The Big Bus. It’s one I’d never seen,…

Peter’s Retro Reviews: Krull (1983)

Tweet by Peter Nielsen ”This, it was given me to know: That many worlds have been enslaved by the Beast and his army, the Slayers. And this too, was given me to know: That the Beast would come to our world, the world of Krull, and his Black Fortress would be seen in the land… That the smoke of burning…

Peter’s Retro Reviews: Sea of Love (1989)

Tweet By Peter Nielsen Sea of Love premiered in December 1989 here in Sweden. I saw it in the theater in early- or mid-January 1990… I think! It might have been a little bit later. My memory is a bit fuzzy because, you know… it was almost 25 years ago! I was on a double-date with my girlfriend at the time…

Peter’s Retro Reviews: Police Story (1985)

Tweet By Peter Nielsen The first time I watched Police Story was at a movie-theater in Copenhagen, Denmark! I’m actually pretty pleased with the fact that I did get to catch it on the big screen, because back then martial arts movies and the Swedish censorship mixed like oil and water. This meant that most, or all, of these were…

Peter’s Retro Movie Review: Deathsport (1978)

Tweet by Peter Nielsen This week I’d like to introduce you to a Roger Corman produced oddity. It was released in ’78 as a kind of unofficial follow-up to Death Race 2000 which was released a couple of years before. Oh, and by the way, ladies and gentlemen? I’ll get to that one too eventually. Deathsport is set in the…

Peter’s Retro Review: Legend (1985)

Tweet by Peter Nielsen ”I am the Lord of Darkness. I require the solace of the shadows and the dark of the night. Sunshine is my destroyer. All this shall change! Tonight, the sun sets forever. There shall never be another dawn…” Welcome to a magical place filled with fairies, elves and unicorns, but also with goblins, sea-witches and demon…

Peter’s Retro Reviews: Scanners (1981)

Tweet by Peter Nielsen ”There are 4 billion people on earth. 237 are Scanners. They have the most terrifying powers ever created…and they are winning.” The other week, I was talking older movies with a good friend of mine, and what a shame it was that they didn’t show more of them on TV. At least not on any of…

Peter’s Retro Rewind: The Last Shark aka L’Ultimo Squalo (1981)

Tweet by Peter Nielsen When this film was first released in the U.S. it actually did pretty well. That is, until Universal Pictures filed a lawsuit to have it pulled from theaters across the country for being too similar to Jaws. And in all fairness… it is a blatant rip-off, but to have it pulled and even outright banned might…

Peter’s Retro Rewind: Class of 1984 (1982)

Tweet by Peter Nielsen “What’s the matter with you? What’s the matter with me? What’s the matter with matter?” Let’s go back to the future this week, shall we? That sentence fits this movie very well, because you could in fact call it a sci-fi movie. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, my movie-pick for this week is actually set in the…

Peter’s Retro Rewind: The Funhouse (1981)

Tweet by Peter Nielsen ”Who will dare to face the challenge of the funhouse? Who is mad enough to enter that world of darkness? How about you, sir?” There’s something special and almost mystical about a carnival, wouldn’t you agree? It arrives, rather quietly, in town one day. Where has it been before? Where does it come from originally? What’s…
